International groups plan energy storage projects in Brazil

Companies from China, Norway and Canada are preparing to develop pilot projects for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Brazil.

China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN ) is working on projects associated with two renewable generation plants affected by curtailment - generation cuts determined by the national electricity system operator (ONS).

In partnership with Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Goldwind, the group plans to connect a battery system to one of the turbines at the Tanque Novo Complex in Bahia.

At the Bom Jesus da Lapa solar plant, also in Bahia, the plan is to integrate a BESS into the alternating current bus of one of the inverters supplied by TBEA, another compatriot that will be a partner in the project.

With the installation of the systems, CGN hopes to stabilize the generation profile throughout the day and reduce losses during curtailment periods.

Norwegian company Statkraft is considering installing batteries next to the Sol de Brotas 7 solar photovoltaic plant in Bahia. The energy storage system (ESS) will have 1.25 MW of installed capacity and 5,026 MWh of storage capacity.

Sol de Brotas is a hybrid project that combines photovoltaic solar plants with the Ventos de Santa Eugênia, Morro do Cruzeiro and Brotas de Macaúbas wind farms.

Elera Renováveis, controlled by the Brookfield group, plans to install BESS systems at the Janaúba solar complex, in northern Minas Gerais, and at the Faísa wind farm, in Ceará.

According to the company, the project in Janaúba would help alleviate the flow of energy from the Northeast to the Southeast, while the Faísa project would replace part of the flexible and costly thermal dispatch in Pecém (Ceará), in addition to smoothing the hydroelectric ramp.

Elera expects that, in both cases, the SAE will be recharged primarily with energy from curtailment, a scenario favored by the assets' diurnal generation profile. The projects' planned storage capacity is up to 20 MWh.
